Associate professor Francesco Di Iorio attended the “Economics in the Era of Natural Computationalism and Big Data Conference, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the “Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata” by John von Neumann” at Duke University (USA) in November 2016. The conference took place from November 11 to November 13 and was about topics related to the philosophy and methodology of economics. As a member of the International Program Committee of that conference Francesco also attended the organizer’ seminar on November 10-11 at the same location.
Francesco gave a talk on November 11 entitled “Hayek as a Methodological Individualist” in which he tried to show the radical differences between the nonreductionist variant of methodological individualism supported by Hayek (and other economists, philosophers and sociologists) and the reductionist variant of methodological individualism supported by mainstream economics. he tried to show that those differences are usually neglected in the scientific literature and that the accusation of reductionism usually levelled at the entire individualist tradition is unfair
